Behind the Curtain: How Returning to Blogging Impacted Our Traffic

One of my goals with blogging is to give a peak into how what we are doing is working. We had a long pause in blogging this year, but I started posting again every day in August. So how has that impacted our website traffic as a whole?

First, we don’t write these posts for the SEO value; I write them to hone our thinking and get our ideas on “paper.” If anyone finds them, great. But to me, that is a side note. If I were trying to produce pure SEO content, every post would be about building websites instead of the wide range of topics we cover.

So how did coming back to blogging impact traffic?

Well, I have good and bad news – which do you want first? You will love this news if you consistently generate content for your website and brand. For The Sky Floor, it suggests taking a break wasn’t a great idea.

The Good News!

Since resuming daily blogging, our overall traffic has been up 103%. Organic Search has been up 35%. With 22 posts in a few short weeks, the new content has driven more visits and engagement with our website. So what is the bad news?

The Bad News

Compared to the same period last year, our Organic Traffic is down 30%. So we are up vs. the prior period but down year over year. Why? Momentum. Google loves to reward the momentum produced from engaging new content. Consistency makes a difference. The break in our posting told the algorithm not to care as much about our content as it aged. Now, if our old posts had gone viral, they would’ve rewarded that despite the gap in posting.

Takeaways:
  • Consistency is rewarded and critical.
  • Know your goals.
  • Actively build your audience – if you have a gap in creation, your audience can help bridge it, but it has to be significant to work.
