The Death of Web Design

Custom web design may be dying, but the ingenuity that drives a great brand forward will always be invaluable.

The rumor is that web design is dead.

With the rise of Squarespace, Wix, and other hosted platforms, there is no need for tailored web design. Users can even build fairly advanced web apps with “no-code” via services like Bubble or Airtable.

On the other side of that, we have the rise of the coding class. As of May 2020, Code.org served over 1 billion hours of their “The Hour of Code” program compared with 118 million hours in May 2015. More and more students are learning the basics of coding.

Globally, coding is on the rise, with many countries offering programs to their youngest students. In India, children as young as seven years old are learning to code and even write apps. Many toddlers are learning basic coding as they are also learning to talk. Low-cost coding is available from these countries via websites like Upwork, Freelancer, and Fivver.

Meet the elephant in the room.

Is there a need anymore for custom web design and development between no-code solutions and the majority of the world learning to code? Won’t development become a race to the bottom of low-cost subscription solutions?

I don’t think so.

The reality is when you hire a business like The Sky Floor, you aren’t buying coding. You get a coded website in the end, but we aren’t selling only that.

In other words, the website is a means to an end – not the end itself.

There may be a place for an $18/mo Squarespace subscription. In fact, for a personal website, it is going to be impossible to beat that value. But the more common low-cost solutions and commodity coding become, the more sense it makes to have your website individualized. To make it memorable.

Ingenuity Will Never Be a Mass Market Product

The most challenging part of launching your idea into the world is the imagination and resourcefulness required for success. You probably already possess a fair bit of those qualities if you are running a business. But why not build a team where you aren’t alone in your problem-solving abilities.

When coupled with experience, there is no more incredible asset than a team of creative, marketing-minded people – that is what we strive to sell at The Sky Floor. Not merely a website, video, or ad campaign, but a partnership of ideas headed toward a common goal – your success.

That is not something you can get for $18/mo or from Freelancer.com.

Custom web design may be dying, but the ingenuity that drives a great brand forward will always be invaluable.
